Best Sellers In The 'Eighties

A correspondent interested in a the 37 list published recently of best sellers in the "Everyman Library" is sent a amilar list compiled by the old "Saturday Journal" in the 'eighties.

This magazine held a ballot of its readers to choose "the 12 greatest British novels of the present century."

It is a remarkable fact that the most popular book in that ballot Thackeray's "Vanity Fair." which also heads the modern list of "Everyman" best sellers.

The second book on the "Saturday Journal" list, however, does not ap- pear at all among the "Everyman”| top 37. It is "Adam Bede." by George Eliot. Scott's "Ivanhoe" was placed third 50 years ago, and it is also placed, though less pro- minently, in the modern list.
