Luck plays just as big a part in Bridge as in any other sphere of life; similarly it is of a player's bad luck that one nearly always hears, and seldom about the good fortune in the lie of the cards or bac defence that enabled a doubt- ful contract to be made. One fac- tor which probably contributes to the atmosphere of silence regard- ing good luck is the superstitious view generally held that to boast or even remark casually about it is virtually to dispel it.
