DISSOLUTION OF CATHOLIC CENTRE PARTY

Vatican City, To-day.

It is understood that an agreement in principle for a concordat between the Vatican and Germany has been reached between Vice-Chancellor Von Papen and Cardinal Pacelli, the Papal Secretary of State.

The new concordat will link up the existing concordats be- tween Prussia, Bavaria and the Vatican.

It is presumed that Chancel- lor Hitler will give adequate assurances regarding Catholic education, and also that the Vatican will probably consent to the dissolution in Germany of the Catholic Centre Party. -Reuter.

MAY PROMISE STEADYING OF FLUCTUATIONS

London, To-day,

The fate of the World Econ- omic Conference seems to hang on the statement to be made to-day by the United States Se- cretary of State, Mr. William Cordell Hull.

While forecasts from New York anticipate that the state- ment will leave matters much as they were before the Con- ference, there is hope in Lon- don that he will give some in- dication of America's plan for temporarily steadying the dol-

lar in foreign exchange mar- kets through the Federal Re-

serve Bank and foreign central banks.

Yesterday was a busy day at Downing Street and Mr. Hull, after a conference with Pre- sident Roosevelt's adviser, Pro- fessor Raymond Moley had 40 minutes' conversation with the British Premier, Mr. Ram- say MacDonald in the after- noon and subsequently saw the Chancellor of the Exche- quer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain and the Treasury officials.

At 6 p.m. Mr. Hull met re- presentatives of the gold coun tries and was in conference for 50 minutes.--Reuter..

France Prepares Toter,

London, July 1.

The battle of the gold franc with the American dollar and British pound sterling has been lost. Jeading financiers here and at Paris said to-day. The opinion was expressed that. it is only a question of time until France is obliged to devalorize, lowering the unit value of her cur-i rency to compete with the leading currencies that have abandoned the gold standard.

M. George Bonnet, the French fizance minister, told Premier Edouard Daladier by telephone to- day that there was no hope of Great Britain stabilizing its cur- rency independently of the United States, a move urgently favoured by France and other countries of the European gold bloc at the world economic conferenece in the last two days.

Economiste said that world econ- omic forces will force France shortly to abandon the present gold basis of the franc or to cheapen the unit by a fourth of fifth to compete with the dollar, which has declined markedly in terms of other currencies since America abandoned gold two months ago,

It was indicated in authori Lative French quarters that lowering the gold value of the frant would be undertaken as soon as the public in France has been educated to the

necessity of the move.
