The all-important factor in- modern lawn tennis is speed. and yet more speed. Other things being equal the man with that extra speed wins the match,.

The new Spalding laminated multi-ply rackets are the fast- rest and most powerful ever produced. They can be strung to the highest possible tension without risk of warping thus giving tremendous pace to the ball as it leaves the racket.

As

Gavia's strength lay in his top spin forehand driving which kept very low. His backhand was also an attacking stroke, and stylishly a tactician Gavia showed signs of great promise. His most apparent weakness yes terday was impetuosity overhead. When he controlled himself he invariably scored winners.

THE RESULTS.

Gavia drew with S. A. Rumjahn 6-4, 5-7,

Polintan beat Tsui Wal-pul 6-3, 6-3.

Gavia and Polintan drew with H. D. and S. A. Rumjaha 3-6, 7-5.

In the first set against Rumjaha,| Colony champion, the visitor play- ed brilliant tennis to lead 5-2, Only a slackening off on his part allow jed Rumjahn to catch up to 5-4. Rumjahn was slow in settling down, and it was only in the second set that we saw the cham- plon at his best. Gavia lost his early accuracy and his backhand cracked up before the devastating forehand attack of Rumjahn in the second set.

Gavia would beat Rumjahn in five sets of serious tennis. He Is a player who is not in the least perturbed by a run of misfortune.
