which if it falls is likely to do so as far from the paddock as possible.

Suppose he has four rides during the day: he will have ridden a minimum of eight miles on hard- pulling horses, after which he may have to set out and, still on light diet, travel the length or breadth of England to ride somewhere else next day.

Since the war there have been! about a dozen fatal accidents to jockeys, which is not. all things cun- sidered, a high figure. Still, the steeplechase rider has always hanging over his head the possibility of being “old out" temporarily or permanently, and though there is an insurance arrangement the lack of funds and the naturally much larger number of claims render the benefits smaller than those paid to flat-racing jockeys.

Restricted diet, a spartan life and risks of injury notwithstanding, the| reward of a steeplechase jockey who is led through a delirious crowd at Aintree on the back of a "National" winner is something more than com- pensation. That is why the success- ful rider has only one brief but cloquent answer to inquiries about his gruelling routine: "It's a grand

life."
