For Bridge Teas

Small cakes for bridge tens should be of the nature of petits- fours. Dishes of these can be made attractive and are never trouble- Rome to ent.

One small sweet, however, which will be received with pleasure is a small cream-filled meringue. Mer- ingues are not difficult to make if the whites of egg are correctly beaten. They must be so stiff that they stick to the boltom of the bas- in if it is turned upside down.

Whip the whites of three new laid-eggs and fold in lightly four jounces of dry sifted castor sugar. Place this mixture-in-a-forcing-bag with a biscuit-forcer inserted at the i point. UPS AND DOWNS OF "BLOOMERISM.”

Trousers For Women In The Fifties,

London.

Mrs. Amelia Bloomer, who gave her name to a piece of woman's ap- parel, was a woman of convictions. She fought all her life long for "trousers for women" until she died sat the age of 76 in 1894.

The ups and downs of Bloomer-} ism, both in Great Britain and |America are described in a new book, "Victorian Sensations" by Horace Wyndham.

It was in 1861 that Mrs. Bloomer finally evolved “a light, attractive, and elegant style," although she) had given some years of thought to the matter of dress reform.

Her "light, elegant style" briefly Jincluded:

"A figured silk bodice, with mus- lin wristlets, and a skirt ending

six incomes below the knee; trou- sers of the same material as the bodice, just covering the tops of the galters, and gathered in with a pretty, two-inch ruffle; boots of black prunelle, with elastic sides, and a straw hat or bonnet, with four-and-a-half inch brim, lined with coloured silk and set off with ribbons and tassels."
