Peking, To-day.

Official despatches were received last evening stating that the Chinese counterattacked at dusk and beat back the Japanese from Lingyuan, where a rearguard action will be fought pending completion of a strong last line forty-five miles long from Pingchuan, in the north- west, to Sataokow, along the heights, forty miles from Jehol City. The line will be manned by Marshal Chang Hsuch-liang's troops.

Defections have greatly facilitated the Japanese advance on Lingyuan Sun Tien-ying, the ex-Kuominchun general, has de- feeled to Manchukuo, while a battalion of Tung Fu-ting's troops have also gone over.

Marshal Chang Hsuch-liang's troops are preparing to make a last stand, the failure or which will mean complete success for the Japan- ese-Manchukuo drive.
