BRILLIANT PLAY IN THE DOUBLES

Chinese R.C. No. 1 Pair Eliminated.

NG SZE KWONG'S GENERALSHIP

(By Ace.)

The surprisingly fine play of Y. Hachiuma was responsible for the first big upset in the Colony Doubles Championship. He and J. W. Leonard, the Craigengower "B" Division pair, defeated Ho Ka-lau and Yew Man-kit, the C.R.C. No. 1 pair and Interport combination, yesterday at the H.K.C.C. by scores of 6-1, 7-5.

The little Japanese player was deadly overhead, and his aggres- sive display completely broke down his opponents' steadiness. His service was working perfectly and he found his true form with his forehand driving. He was also brilliant at the net.

Leonard never showed his best form; and in the second set cracked up badly. Hachiuma's effort in the face of such adds was extremely laudable, and in him wa have now a worthy successor to T.. Honda.

Ho's lobbing proved his undo- ing.

Hachiuma easily smashing

them for gift points. Ho lacked length and his placements were not as sound as usual. Yow was good at the net, but his base line game was very indifferent.

In the Second Round the Craigengower pair meet Wong Fuk-nam and Ho Hin-kwan. and should win comfortably. They have only Ng Sze-kwong and Tsui Wai-pui as formid- able opponents in their path to the Final.

FINCHER'S "HAT TRICK.”

Fielding practically the same team as that which will visit Macau on Sunday, the St. Andrew's Club defeated the R.A.O.C. by fiva goals to nil in a Mamak TournK« ‚ ment match on the Marina ground yesterday afternoon.

E. H., P. White was an absentee from the Saints defence his place. being taken by S. MacNider, who played a good game.

The R.A.0.C. lacked the services of Sands, their best player in the forward line.

Staff Sergeant Dyer, in goal for the Corps, played a brilliant game, and it was mainly through his fine efforts that the Corps หน saved from a much heavier defeat. In the first half, the Saints werc early pressing, but Morgan cleared well. The soldiers raided the Salata citadel once or twice, but good clearances were effected by S. MacNider, Guest and Hamson. In a concerted attack, F. Wong, went through on his own to open the acoring. Before half time, Fincher added the second goal with a neat scoop shot.

The Saints did most of the press- ing In the second half, their for ward line showing good combina- toin, but Mackay was inclined to keep back a little too much. Dyer was called upon early to save consecutive shots from Carroll and Fincher.

Occasional breakaways effected by the soldiers, but R. H. Wong was never much worried. Short passing between Mackay and Fincher saw the latter find the net to score the Saints third goal. Maintaining pressure, Fin- cher completed his "hot trick" with a shot that took Dyer by surprise. Towards the end, F. Wong acored the Saints fifth goal. In this period of the game, Guest was re sponsible for some fine clearances.
