NEW N.Y.K. LINERS
PROPOSED.
Four Vessels For New York Line,
Tokyo.
The Nippon Yusen Kaisha has de- cided to construct four liners to be commissioned on the New York; line, each with a tonnage of 17,- 000 and developing a cruising speed of 18 knots an hour.
The construction of each vessel will cost approximately 4,000,000
учед
In order further to study the comfort of their clients, the N.Y.K. is contemplating, at heavy expense altering the berthing arrangement of the 1st class cabins on the Ha- Jkone Maru, Hakozaki Maru, Hakna- an Maru and Harina Maru. At! present, the 1st class two-berthed j cabins on these vessels each con- tains a lower and an upper berth;} but commencing with the Hakone Moru, which sailed from Hong Kong оп February 4. all Let class two-berthed cabins will be fitted with only lower berths: This alterations, con- ducing to more comfort, will no doubt be appreciated by the travelling public.
WAGES MUST BE KEPT UP IN 1933.

Mrs. Pearce's Trentbridge fulfilled predictions February 20 when he galloped home to a decisive victory in the Hong Kong Derby. Ridden by Mr. V. V. Needa, of Shanghai, the favourite showed splendid stamina in a finé finishing run. Riding Mrs. Dunbar's Tillicum in the Tyro Stakes, Mr. W. Hill, the Shanghal jockey, returned the first three-figure dividend of the annual race meeting, beating the Godwil, a well-fancied candidate, ridden by Mr. L. G. Frost, to pay $109. The race, which was over fire furlongs, was won in 1 minute: 14.2 seconds. Diana Bay, whose defeat was the surprise of the day on February 18, vin- dicated himself by winning the Victoria Stakes, over a mile distance, while Racing Boy, another of last year's favourites clocked a mile distance in 2 minutes, 07.1 seconds, to win the Garrison Cup.
The annual meeting is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL,
