CONTENDER FOR TITLE

(By Ace.)

NAPTAIN CANNON very nearly brought off a sensational vic- tory over Taui Wai-pui, favoured in some circles for the title, when he fully entended the promising young Chinese player in. quite the best match of the tournament to date at the H. K. C. C. yesterday. Only lack of stamina cost him the match at 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, after he had led 3-2 in the final set.

On his form yesterday Tsui will be unable to beat S. A. Rum- jahn, the holder, when they meet in the Fourth Round.

Ng Sze-kwong, holder of the title from 1918 to 1923 inclusive, met with overwhelming defeat at the hands of Lai Kwong-tsun, last year's finalist in the MalayanChampionship, in his attempted comeback. The former champion showed all his old court-craft, but his stroke production was surprisingly weak, and Lai had little difficulty in winning for the "foss of only que game.

Lai should overcome J. A. E. Cassumbhoy, who beat H. Y. Ho by 6-2, 6-3 yesterday, in the Third Round and has an excellent chance of beating L. Goldman in the Semi-Final Round.
