Thousands of awestricken Neapo- litans are watching the fiery glow in the sky above Mount Vesuvius, which is hurling showers of incan- descent stones into the air.

Neighbouring villagers terri- fied by severe earthquake shocks have fled from their homes and, spent the night in the fields.

There has, so far, been no damage, but Professor Mal- ladru, Director of the Mount Vesuvius Observatory has issued a grave warning that a serious eruption may occur in the Spring.

He explains that the outlet of the volcano is decreasing in size and if it continues to decrease. the volcano may blow out another ouflel, a catastrophe which hap-{ pened in 1929, when a village was destroyed by lava. Reuter.
