The breaking up of the Cunard llner. Carmable, which prompted a tribute from the Admiralty, to her vory gallant action with the Gør- man armed liner Cup Trafalgar in September, 1914, ought also to re- call that this success largely the work of officers and man of the Royal Naval Reserve.
one of the The Carmania was original nine liners taken up for duty as auxiliary cruisers. Her captain, James Barr, who made C.B. for his services, romain- ed as navigator, with the tempor ary rank of commander, R.N.R., and eight of her lino watch-keep-i ing officers were from this force. The only R.N. executive officers appointed were the commanding officer, Captain Noel Grant, and the first lieutenant, Lieutenant E. L. B. Lockyer. Captain Grant, who was made C.B. after the action, died as rear-admiral in 1920. Lieutenant Lockyer was awarded] a retired the D.S.O., and is now commander. The naval ratings, who came from Portsmouth, were chiefly from the R.N.R. and R.F.R., a number of Scottish fishermen being among the former.
