It was all to the good when the architects of the late nineteenth and| early twentieth centuries decided that it would be a good thing for the Victorian villa to'be superseded by a modern version of the Isixteenth-century home.

Reproductions of half-timbered houses, with plenty of plasterwork and lattice panca, were, even if a little mechanical, a distinct improve ment up: stucco and long flights of front doorsteps...

For the time being the suburbs, both garden and otherwise, going all out for Jacobean furniture with which to fill their Tudor interiors, scored a success. They had. fun choosing lantern fitments for their electric light, basket-grates for the gas-fires, rush matting for the floors, and reproduction tapestry for the curtains.
