London.Having started the sale of the M Class with the pioneer Manora, the British India Line Is removing from its fleet the older passenger steamers which are not up to the standard that the com- pany has set since the war, and

scrappers after no more than 18 years' service.

(COMPANIES incorporated in ENGLAND). the Merkara has now gone to the

MAIL AND PASSENGER STEAMERS.

Had times been normal, the cam- pany might have considered giving her exhaust turbine nchinery to Increase her speed and moderais ing here generally, for she started with a splendid hull built, by Messrs. Burclay, Curle and Co. As far as her hull is concerned, she is good for many more years, but presumably her owners cannot see sufficient signs of a revival, in trade to justify either modernising

until the Indian, trade has improv-| ed sufficiently to demand her ser- vices.

It was not until some 3watów, Amoy and Foochow time after the war that she was "Straits and Calcutta run, with put on the Calcutta

which she is generally associated,

She was a particularly success ful ship, popular with her passen- gers on account of her solid com- fort, and as good a cargo 'carrier as the state of trade would permit, until early in March last when she arrived at Falmouth, where she has been laid up ever since. She has had a short life, it is true, but that has been due to the improve- ments which the company hus effected and not to any faults of

her own.
