The sensational defeat of the Giraffe by 21⁄2 lengths by the Kong Bros., crack Australian pony, Polar Star, in the Fremantle St. Leger, rubbed Mr. Leo Frost of his chance of opening a new chapter in the history of the Colony turf by winning the three St. Legers.
The champion jockey won the Hong Kong St. Leger on Liberty Bay, and the sub-griffins St. Leger on Racing Boy, at the thirteenth extra race meeting held at the Valley On November 5, and had he brought off the hat trick he would have established a precedent in the annals of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Two record times were bettered during the day's racing, 9.4/5 seconds being clipped off the time for the 1% miles distance for Australian ponies and 1.3/5 seconds being clipped from the best time over the same distance for China ponies. Neither of these new times constitute, re- cords, owing to the scale of weight per inches.
A detailed report of the meeting is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
Scut and Sassenach alike gathered at the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps Headquarters to celebrate the Scottish Company's eighth Hallowe'en Reunion, Dinner on November 4. Ushered in to the swirling music of the pipes, the haggis, brown and steaming, was the motif of the even- ing. The passing round the official table of the bowl with a "wee sma" drappie" was also carried out with due ceremony. Nearly 100 other members of the Scottish Coy., and guests were present. Capt. Forsyth proposed the loyal toast, and after the singing of "Scots Wha Hae," Capt. Forsyth again rose to propose "The Visitors," Mr. K. E. Greig replying,

The grounds of St. Andrew's Church, Kowloon, were gaily decked for the occasion of the Olde English Faire, which commemorates the opening of St. Andrew's Church for public worship. The Faire on November 5-was declared open by Mrs. J. R. Wood, the wife of the Paisne Judge of Hong Kong, in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering, the opening ceremony taking place on the Village Green. Bright sunshine favoured the largely attended func tion. All the fun of the traditional “faire” was thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike. There were many booths at which all kinds of commodities, fruits, flowers, needle- work, books, cigarettes, and Christmas presents of all des- criptions, were sold,
The function is reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
Her decks crowded with khaki-clad figures, and, played out by three bands, the troopship Neuralia left the harbour at 10 a.m. on November 4 en route to Shanghai with a bat- tulion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and a num- ber of detalls. His excellency the General Officer Command- ing, Major-General J. W. Sandilands, C.B., CM.G., D.S.O., was on board, en route to the North to pay a short visit. His Excellency, accompanied by his A.D.C.'s, Captain D., R., M. Cameron and Lieut. Baskervyle-Glegg, arrived at the quay-side about half an hour before the ship sailed, and after exchanging greetings with a large number of officers, went on board.
