Nevertheless, they contributed to their own defeat by closs passing, pretty work against tenacious half- backs and backs.

In the second half the Hamlet rearranged their. side, Benka going left half, and Toser, a most pro- mising young player, acting as pivot. Again, however, the Ham- let held the ball too close, and Morrish was badly neglected.. .... Leyton, playing the open game

"Pompey" Foiled At The Last Minute.

By Checker. Middlesbrough 5, Portsmouth 4.

A last-minute goal enabled Mid- dlesbrough to fin their frat home victory of the season at the expense of Portsmouth, who were beaten 5-4.

The Borough were the superior team in the first half. Their for- ward work was especially smart, the ball being swung from wing, to wing with fine precision, and they deserved their lead at the end of twenty minutes, though their two goals were of a somewhat freakish. kind.

The first wag acored by Cam-. sell with an overhead kick five yards out, the ball going into the net off a Portsmouth defender. "Five minutes later, during an exciting struggle in the Portsmouth goalmouth, Cameron back-heeled

Portsmouth took a long time to settle down, but near half-time the forwarde found their form and Weddle scored after Rutherford had struck a goalpost.

Cameron, within five minutes of resuming, headed a third goal for Middlesbrough following a corner.

Then followed some whirlwind play by the Portsmouth forwards, and in five minutes three goals ware acored through Eason, Friar, and, Rutherford.

Middlesbrough, however, also demonstrated that they were ca«. pable of smashing raids: Camsell equalised, and in an ex- jetting Anish Williams scored the
