A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

The Legislative Council on October 6, discussed the 1933 Budget Estimates for Hong Kong, totalling » $27,585,142, applauding the policy of an economy contained" in it. There were suggestions from individual members of the Council for various additional Public Works Develop- ments, notably in Kowloon, and Sir Henry Pollock pointed out the advisability of retiring the 6 per cent, $5,000,000 public works loan and borrowing locally at 41⁄2 or 4 per cent. instead of at the present rate of interest. Mr. L. Reidy's Champagne Bay, who sprang a 'sur- prise by coming home first, in the Junk Bay Handicap at the last extra race meeting at the Valley, sprang yet another on October 8, at the 12th Extra Meeting, when he romped home a comfortable winner in the Nathan Handicap for "C" Class ponies, to pay the biggest dividend of the day, $60.60."

Mr. Chan Tin-son's record holder, Woodland Stag, set a new mark for the mile distance for Australian ponies. when ridden by Mr. L. G. Frost, the champion jockey, in the Canberra Handicap. In spite of having to carry 170 Ibs, the Stag had little difficulty in winning. A full report of the meeting, both on Saturday and Monday, is reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

A plucky fight against overwhelming odds, by F. L. Parton, a German competitor, riding a British "Midget" machine, was the outstanding feature of the motor cycle reliability trial on October 9, which started from the Fire Station Compound at 12.1 a.m. and finished at 1.19 p.m.

Out of 27 competitors, only 15 finished the course, two of them being more than an hour late. Frontier Road, which was negotiated, during the hours of darkness, claim- ed the greatest number of victims, several of whom lost their way at the four roads' junction at the end of the stretch, while others crashed on the narrow "Colonial” thoroughfare,'

Only one serious spill occurred, Mr. P. A. P. da Silva, riding a B.S.A., crashed into a wall at Talpo, wrecking his machine and sustaining injuries to his hands and legs. A detailed report. is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

James Hamilton, 19, a private in the 2nd Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who, as soldier, has an extraordinary record, haying been under detention on many occasions, broke away from Military escort at, the Sham Shui Po camp in the early hours of October 7. Following this bolt, he perpetrated a series of minor crimes, for which he was sentenced to three "months' hard labour by the Central Magistrate on October 11.
