Ellsworth, Vines, who joined a select band of tennis players by winning the Wimbledon title in his first year of entry, can now be ranked as the world's leading player after his two victories ́over Henri Cochet, the French ace who has held sway for the last three years.

Last Saturday Vines completely outplayed Cochet in the Final Round of the American National Singles Championship at Forest Hills. He won in straight sets to retain his title. During his tour of Europe Vines met with only two defeats Harry Hopman (Aus- tralia) defeated him in the London Championships and Jean Borotra (France) surprised him in the Challenge Round of the Davis Cup in Paris.
