Anchorage the extraordinary rapidity of the development of the motor ship as exemplified in the figures which have just been published in the 1982-1988 edition of Lloyd's Regis ter book. Recorded in this volume are 4,420 vessels of 10,038,000 tons gross, fitted with internal-combus- tion engines. In 1914 the tonnage was 220,000, so that there has been nearly a fifty-fold increase during the past 18 years.
