The sensational trial of Cheng Kwok-yau, youthful son of a wealthy Ipoh family, reached its final stage on September 14, when the Chief Justice of Hong Kong (Sir Joseph Kemp, KC., C.B.E.), donned the fateful black cap, and passed sentence of death. The prisoner, who had kept a stoical calm throughout his trial, smiled faintly on hear- ing the dreaded words being pronounced. Unprecedented crowds, the majority of whom were stylishly clothed women, thronged the Supreme Court.

Mr. R. C. H. Lim, representing the accused, indicated that the defence were applying for special leave to Privy Council.

Judgment by the Full Court on points reserved by the defence in regard to the inadmissibility of the evidence generally of Edward Zimmern and Sydney Christie and the Trial Judge's erring in his summing-up to the Jury, was delivered on Monday, September 12, The Puime Judge (Mr. Justice Wood) affirmed the conviction, and the Chief' Justice concurred. Both agreed that the evidence of Zimmern and Christle was admissible to the main issue — the procuring by the accused of the murder of George Fung who was shot dead by hired unmen inaVillage Road on the night of March 24 last,
