TAKE SECRET OATH
MYSTERIOUS CEREMONIES
(From Our Own Correspondent).
Canton, To-day. There is fresh and impressive evidence of a definite split be- tween the Cantonese and Nanking political factions.
Yesterday, the Southwestern Supreme Court, was 'opened, and Mr. Feng Pei was appointed its head. Officials of the court were also named and the inauguration ceremonies will take place on September 16.
The recently increased telegraph rate, applicable to territory under the administration of Canton, is another indication of the trend towards separation.
But the most significant thing
of all is the mysterious oath MCRUVIE
which all officers of the Canton;
Government, civil and military,
are now requied to take.
It was about a month ago that the South-western Executive Council issued instructions that this new.oath of allegiance should be taken.
In the place of burial of 72 martyrs, the Resting House of Wong Fa Kong, civilian officials gather at midnight and go through a strange ceremonial. For military men, the oath is taken. in a garrison cemetery in the East Suburb.
