THE CHINA MAIL.

THREE NEW FERRIES

HIGH SPEED DIESELS.

An order has been placed for three motor-car passenger ferries to operate between Hong Kong and Kowloon The service is run by the Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Co., and the ships, will be büllt by the Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Co. They are 125 ft. long, and in each will be installed two 400 b.hip. Gardner Diesel engines running at 280 r.p.m. The boats. are of the double-ended. type. The number of passengers carried is about 550 and the speed will be 10 knots.

The three ferries will have a beam of 41 ft. 6 ins, whilst the draught fully loaded will be 9 ft., the maximum displacement being 750 tons. The engines. have eight cylinders with a diametre of 12 ins. the piston stroke being 15 ins. Although they are of the direct) deversing type they will, in service, run in only one direction. There are "two propellers' on each shaft, one forward and one aft, also two clutches on each engine, similarly arranged. When proceeding in one! direction the two aft clutches are forward engaged and the two clutches and propellers are idle. To stop or reverse the direction of the ship the forward clutches are en- gaged as the propellers on these shafts turn in the opposite direction to those at the other end of the ship.

The control levers of the clutches are interconnected in such a way that the engaged clutch must come; out before the other can be pat in.. There is also a neutral position where both clutches are out of engagement.

Each vessel will be equipped with two 38 b.h.p. Gardner engine auxiliary sets for lighting, pumping and compressed air supply. These are of the high-speed Diesel type..

HONG KONG TIDES.

The time used is Standard, or mean time of the meridian of 120 deg. E.; 00h. is midnight, 12hrs. is noon. The heights are referred to the datum of the largest scale Admiralty chart of the place and should be added to the depths given on the chart unless pre- ceded by an asterisk (*), when they should be subtracted from the depths.
