"WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

While hiking alone, in the hills between Fanling* and. Sha Tau Kok, near Plover Bay, an alarming experience be- fell Warrant Officer C. B.. Wanstell, of the Supplies and Transport Office, Victoria Barracks, on bank holiday, August 1. He slipped on a wet rock and stunned himself, and narrowly escaped drowning in the bed of a small river, which owing to recent rains, was in full flood. Had he fallen right into the stream, the force of the water would have washed him over the brink of the waterfall on to the rocks about 100 feet below. A full story of the exciting adventure is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

Eight Chinese were killed, "including four children, and seven others were seriously injured in a fire which swept at merciless speed through the crowded living quarters of two attached dwellings, 129 and 131 Pel Ho Street, Sham Shui Po district, in the early hours of July 31. Some of the forty occupants of the two dwellings who were too late to escape down the narrow staircase saved their lives by jumping into a canvas sheet. A full report of the outbreak is contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

Unofficial members of the Sanitary Board are unant- moua in their condemnation of certain phases of the recom→ mendations för reform in the administration of this branch of the Colony Government, put forward at the last meet- ing of the Board by the Director of Medical and Sanitary Services (Hon. Dr. A. Robartes Wellington). At the meet ing of the Sanitary Board held on August 2, all unofficial members voted in favour of Mr. C. Champkin's motion of opposition, while the official members refrained from voting. The meeting is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL,

General Tsai Ting-kai, a national hero in China since the Shanghai fighting, has appeared as political saviour in Fuklen, driven the bandits, who infested the region, into remote parts, unseated an unpopular Governor and lifted the burden of the taxes under which the province suffered.

The rapid changes in the internal affairs of Fukien'were: carried out without great difficulty. Now, the authorities are planning to form their Air Force for National Defence, with $500,000 in hand with which to purchase 11 fighting planes. A story is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL
