Four world's records and, five Olympic records were shattered to-day when Olympic athletes staged one of the greatest athletic 'meetings ever held. T. Hampson, English half-mile champion, re- gistered Britain's first win by a brilliant victory in the 800 metres. Liu Chang-tseng, China's sole representative at the Games, made a great effort to qualify in the 200 metres being beaten only by inches for third place. He ran strongly for 160 yards, but was overhauled in the straight.

Lord Burghley showed that his defeat in the 400 metres hur- dles yesterday was only a temporary eclipse. With G. O. Finlay (R.A.F. and English 120 yards hurdles champion) he will represent Great Britain against three Americans and one German in the final of the 110 metres hurdles. Saling, who exablished a new world's record of 14.4/10th seconds by winning his heat to-day, appears a probable winner.

It was all Britain in the 800 metres, Hampson winning for the United Kingdom, with two Canadians in the places. Running beau- tifully, Hampson smashed most of the field by his terrific pace in the first lap, which he covered in under 55 seconds. Edwards, the Canadian negro, was well back but moved up fast at the bell, while: Wilson issued a strong challenge coming into the straight. · Hamp- son, however, had timed his race wonderfully, and he breasted the tape inches ahead of Wilson after a thrilling and spectacular race.. His amazing time of one minute 49 seconds stamps him as one of the greatest middle-distance runners of all time, and a worthy successor to D. G. Löwe, the Englishman who twice won this event..
