AMMUNITION EXPLODES

SINKS OFF BUND AFTER BURNING FOR 30 MINUTES

A terrific explosion occurred on the Canton river-gunboat "Taun Tait" on Sunday night, when the ammunition store con- taining thousands of bullets and ́n large quantity of high explo- sives, blew up.

The officers and crew on board the ship had a miraculous es- cape from death, no fatalities being reported. Seven ratings, how- ever were injured, three of them seriously.

Following the explosion, which almost shattered the stern of the vessel, a fierce fire raged and the ship sank within half-an-hour. The explosion occurred at 10.45 p.m., while the vessel was

anchered off the East Band, at Canton, and the cause is said to be due to the hot weather. In addition to the large stock of bullets in the store, there were 50 shells.

Immediately after the explosion, the injured men were rush-
