CAMPBELL BREAKS
ARMY RECORD
QUARTER MILE EFFORT IN Y.M.C.A. BATH
TO ATTACK COLONY RECORD
ERIC RAILTON COACHES SWIMMER OF GREAT POSSIBILITIES.
(China Mail Special)
In an unofficial swimming trial in the Y.M.C.A. Swimming bath last Wednesday Pte. W. T. Camp- bell, "C" Company, South Wales Borderers, broke the British Army record for the Quarter Mile when he returned the time of 6 minutes 2 seconds. The previous record was held by Spr. A. May of the Royal Engineers, who returned a time of 6 mins. 11.4/5 secs. in the Inter-Services Chanipionships.
Pte. Campbell, under the tuition of Eric Rail- ton, hopes to attack L. Roza-Pereira's 1931 record of 5 mins. 42 secs. within the next fortnight. At the present moment he is indulging in too much water- polo, but with a record within his grasp Campbell has decided to go into strict training in an endea- vour to lower the 220 Yards and the Half Mile times for the Colony in addition to his attempt on the Quarter Mile.
Spr. A. May, whose record Campbell shattered, was A local born boy who won the Quarter-Mile title of the Colony in 1923, when he cover ed the distance in 6 minutes 19 seconds. He then left the Colony, for Canada and later returned to England where he joined up in the Royal En- gineers.
Mr. Railton is most enthusiastic over Campbell's chances of break- ing the record as the Borderer has been in strict training for only two weeks. "His first attempt has
been very satisfactory considering that he was swimming in fresh water and that Roza-Pereira eațab- lished his figures in salt water."

THE KING'S CUP
Limited Field.
This year's restrictions, though entirely different from those of last year, have been equally effec- tive in limiting the field. In 1930
the entries numbered 110. Last year the race was open only to amateur pilota; this year the ama- tear pilot of small experience was excluded by the condition that all pilots must have flown solo for, more than 100 hours.
Well-known Entrants, Flying Officer E. C. T. Edwards, who flew Sir Robert McAlpine's Bluebird last year, entered his own Martlet, a single-seater of moderate performance. Miss Winifred Brown, the winner in 1930, entered a sports Avian,j a product of the same firm as that which built her 1930 machine. Three of the owners of Puss Moths who made the beat times
