Miss Elizabeth Ryan, acknowledged by the critics us the world's leading lady, doubles player, partnered by H. Maier, the Spanish champion, had to fight hard against Mile. Sigart and Harry Hop- man in the first set. The Belgian champion was striving for the "double," whilst Hopman was attempting to register the only Bri-Pte. London, Baturday,

The Yankees are forging ahead. The feature of the British Amateur Athletic Championships at in the American League with the the White City Stadium was the running of Dr. F. P. Reid, the Scots Detroit Tigers and the Athletics in tish sprint champion. He won the 220 Yards, though not returning the running. Averill took the op- portunity. this week-end to hit his fifteenth homer of the season to tie with Al Simmons of the Ath-

brilliant figures, thus showing that he was recovered from the in- Jury which did not allow him to compete in the A.A.A. team against Cambridge University on June 8. He was then suffering from pulled muscle and his forced withdrawal from the track coat gloom over British athletic circles with regard to the coming Olympla Games. His form yesterday was good and most encouraging, though 7 it was realised that he was unable to give of his best.
