more deadly than others, 1 believe the case-mortality in the present epidemic is far below the above figure. The disease, peculiarly, is always more deadly in the earlier than the later stages of an: epidemic. Modern treatment with Roger's hypertonic solution: given intravenously has reduced the case-mortality enormously.
Public Preventive Measures. Water Supply. Fortunately the water supply in Hong Kong is wholesome. Elsewhere in which the supply is drawn from wells or rivers It is exceedingly dangerous during these titties. Whenever the water supply is suspicious, one reliable method is to add one dram of Potás sium Permanganate to every gallon of water, and at the end of 24 hours It will be ready for use, the purple colour would have then dis- appeared. Certain, people prefer bleaching powder, and if the odour of cholerine is not objected to, it is also a good method of water disinfection.
Quarantine Prevention
It is true that so far we have every confidence in the purity of our water supply, but it does not imply that because of this, the danger of an epidemic will not arise. For instance th was estimated that in
the Naples, epidemic of 1911, 90 per cent of the cases were direct contacts with patients healthy carrier. Further, f that with the existing
