Gene Sarazen to-day accomplished his life's ambition to The Indian XI. concluded the win the American Open and British Open Golf Championships in first day of the Test match against England at Lord's in a most satis- the same year. This feat has been achieved only on one other oc factory position. On a good caalon when Bobby Jones won the British and American Opens wicket they dismissed the strong England batting side for 259 and and the. British and Amateur, Open Championship in 1930,
when stumps were drawn they were only 229 runa in arrears with all their wickets in hand.
A dazzling exhibition of golf in the fourth round gave Sarazen a last minute victory over Phil Perkins, the British professional, The crowd which followed Sarazen from one lee to another remain ed spell-bound at the accuracy of his driving and putting. Even the great Bobby Jones could not have returned better figures for those
last eighteen holes.

'70 + 72 (last two, rounds) Sarazen made a remarkable re-j covery after returning cards aggre- gating 150 for the Brst two rounds, and at the conclusion of the third round was one stroke behind Phil Parkins who led the field with 219, It was then that the crowd saw the true Sarazen fighting for his life's ļambition. Dazzling was hardly the word for his golf. The huge gallery which followed him were all on his side, but they could not but reveal their amazement at some of the masterly shots that Sarazen dis- played.

Curiously enough Sarazen is one of those players who is at his best in the spring, but who falls away as the summer months come on. HIB genlus then seems to desert him and he becomes a very mediocre golfer. He plays a powerful game through- fout, and is a perfect exponent of long iron play. He has during his career been nicknamed the "pocket) Hercules.'
