PEACE COMMITTEE.

Paris, May 30, The split between the French Rugby Federation and the rival French Amatour Rugby Union has at last con- cluded, a joint assembly of the two bodies to-day unanimous ly deciding to accept the pro- ·. posals of the "Peace Com- 'mittee" drawn up at Bordeaux on May 5.

The "Peace Committee” was composed of five former Interna tionals, and their proposals, rough- ly, are:-

(1) The appointment of a disci- plinary commission of seven mem

former bera, composed of three captains of France, two members from the French Rugby Federation, and two from the French Amateur Rugby Union.

M

(2) The setting up of a sporting commission to define the status of clubs within the jurisdiction of the ruling bodies, and to see that they are run on strictly amateur prin- ciples.

(3) Clubs to completé in cham- plonships to be defined by the com- mon consent of the French Rugby Federation, the French Amateur Rugby Union and the representa- tives of the Peace Committee.

(4) The appointment of regional committees next season for the or- ganisation of regional champion- ships under the control of the French Rugby Federation.

(5) The setting up of a commis- sion by the French Rugby Federa tion to organise a new French championship, in which the clubs participating in the Inter-regional matches shall have no financial ad- vantage over the smaller clubs, who shall receive a share of the ceipts.

YO

Fierce Competition. The original cause of the split Was the fierce competition in the French Rugby championship, which led many clubs to resort to brutal play and semi-professionalism, an succes in the foampionship matches meant large gate receipts, and failure meant extinction. These the methods, and the failure of Federation to put a stop to thom, were deprecated in many quarters and a band, formed originally of twelve clubs, known as the "Douze" and "Bebels," broke away from the Federation and the championship and, set up an organisation of their own, called the French Amateur Rugby Union,

The latter, whose membership In- creased week by week, urged the Federation to discard the cham pionship and to have club matches, as is done in England, but the Federation was adamant and a deadlock ensued. This was follow- ed by the British Unions decision not to allow France to compete In.. the International championship. T wap then that the Peace Com- mittee was formed to bring the two organisations together. The acceptance of the committee's pro Dosald It only the beginning of the Healing of the split, as everything depends on whether and how

are carried out
