underwriters.

Fire is now by far the greatest danger to the modern, ship and the lives she carries. In the case of foundering, collision, or wreck, the number of casualties decreased steadily year by year, until ships are as safe from those particular dangers as they can reasonably be hoped to be.

With fire It is different. The underwriters have recently paid hundreds of thousands of pounds on fire claims.

Until the Georges Philippar, with the exception of the liner Bermuda, which was twice burned in port and therefore did not risk any lives,! these losses have generally

been concerned with cargo ships. The result is that they have attracted practically no attention outside the shipping business.
