HOLMES & SUTCLIFFE BREAK RECORD
SCORE 555 FOR FIRST WICKET AGAINST ESSEX
SUTCLIFES HIGHEST SCORE
HOLMES LEFT BEHIND IN SCORING BUT STILL UNDEFEATED.
London, Yesterday. Holmes and Sutcliffe to-day broke the world's record for a first-wicket partnership when they scored 555 against the Essex attack at Leyton. The previous record was held, curiously enough, by another Yorkshire pair J. T. Brown and J. Tunnicliffe, who scored 554 for Yorkshire against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in 1898.
Continuing their innings to-day the famous pair advanced the score from 423 to 555 amid tense ex- citement. Sutcliffe, after the record had been passed, was dismissed for 313, the highest score of his career, whilst Holmes remained undefeated with 224 to his credit, eighteen extras helping to compile the record score.
Scenes unparalleled in the his- tinguished career, his provious best tory of the Essex County Cricket effort being 255 not out in 1924.
