WIGHTMAN CUP FOR AMERICA

BRITISH TEAM LOSE BY 4-3 AT WIMBLEDON

CRITICISM JUSTIFIED

BRITAIN ́AND GERMANY TO PLAY IN DAVIS CUP SEMI-FINAL.

Wimbledon, Yesterday.

The United States lady tennis players repeated their success of last year when they defeated the British ladies by the narrow! margin of four matches, to three in the Wightman Cup match at Wimbledon on Saturday and Sunday.

The victorious American team was comprised of Mrs. Wills- Moody, Miss Helen Jacobs, Mrs. L. A. Harper and Miss Sarah Palfrey. The British team was composed of Miss Betty Nuthall, Mrs. Fearnley-Whittingstall, Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Klag.

The defeat of the British side, though by a less margin than| last year, has fully justified the criticism of the selectors, who were content to rely on the old guard instead of allowing youth to have its opportunity. Miss Stammers and Miss Scriven were both passed over when their inclusion might well have broken the Americans' chain of successes.

Lewis Unwary,

A hotly-disputed incident occur- red when Georges Carpentier, the Frenchman, knocked out Kid Lewis, the British hope, in the first round in 1922. Palmer, the referee, had just spoken to the fighters, and Lewis lowered his guard, probably thinking he was of distance. Carpentier promptly knocked his opponent

WORLD HOCKEY CHAMPIONS.

Reason for Fouls on Scolt. Phil Scott, the British heavy- weight, was probably fouled more often than any other prominent boxer.' This was at least partly due to his great height and erect stance, which compelled many of his opponents to go for his body. With the modern practice of swinging blows up at the lower ribs. It is obvious that If the other man steps in as the blow at him is delivered, a foul is certain to result,
