AUSTIN'S BRILLIANT

COMEBACK

STRAIGHT SETS WIN OVER MARGIN

GREAT BRITAIN v. U.S.A,

AMERICA AND JAPAN GAIN LEADS IN DAVIS CUP MATCHES.

Eastbourne, Yesterday.

"Bunny" Austin, around whom centre Great Britain's hopes of winning the Davis Cup, dispelled all doubts concerning his physical condition when he displayed brilliant form to defeat Gregory Marjin, the United States Indoor Champion, by scores of 6-1, 6-3, 9-7 in the Great Britain v. United States, encounter here to-day.

Austin recently underwent an operation to his nose and, though he made a very satisfactory recovery, he was unable to play in the British Davis Cup trials at the Queen's Club or to take his place in the British team against Roumania in the second round. It was then thought that Britain's chances of winning the Davis Cup were very poor, but Austin's speedy recovery and the form which he displayed against Marjin has placed British hopes in a high pedestal.

Reuter's Special Service.

Ellsworth Vines, America's No. 1 ranking player is taking part in this international encounter which should provide a pointer re garding the possible clash of Great Britain in the Davis Cup en- counter. His place in the American Davis Cup team, which is now playing at Forest Hills, has been given to Wilmer Allison.
