SUCCESSFUL CONCERT

Visiting Singer Pleases.

MR. L. DA SILVA

THE CHINA MAIL.

A good reception was accorded Mr. Lomelino da Silva, the tyrie tenor at his recital in the Ross Room of the Peninsula Hotel last f-night----

He thoroughly delighted his audience, and that the concert was to be a success was evident from the applause at the conclusion of his first ariu, "Questa o quella" from Rigoletto.

From then his vigorous voice, the quality, volume and range appar ently equally penetrating, to which was added a personality seldom seen on the operatic stage in Hong Kong, completely dominated his audience.

Da Silva, not only possesses a "tricky" voice, tremalous or bell-like as he chooses, but he merits at- tention for the dramatic demeanour which rouses sympathetic response in his listeners.

Numerous encores were demand ed throughout the programme, Da Silva's dramatic scope finding its fullest expression in a delightful programme.

SALE OF GIRLS IN THE PUNJAB

Allahabad, April 27,

An appeal before the Allahabad High Court has brought to light the existence of two bogus widows' homes in Lahore and Damoh (C.P.), ostensibly to serve 15 widows' homes for helpless and forlorn widows, but really meant to attract women and girls for sale in the Peninsula.
