Among the eloquent indices of the conditions is the fact that at the present rate the withdrawal of the strictly foreign exchange reserve balances from New York can be completed within a com paratively short time. OF VICTORY.

(SPECIAL TO THE "CHINA MAIL".)

(From Our Own Staff Correspondent.)

Shanghai, To-day

A brilliant batting partnership between A. H. Madar and G. C. Burnett saved Hong Kong from ignominious collapse in their second innings in the Interport cricket match here to-day. These two young players (both bowlers) defied the strong Shanghai attack when the score-board showed 53 for 7 wickets. Both men batted splendidly, treat- ing the bowling on its merits, and opening out to anything loose.

Madar was in great form, playing attractive shots all round the wicket. Burnett played a nice straight bat, and drove beautifully on the off.

The pair had added 60 for the eighth wicket and were still undefeated at tiffin. Their display has given Hong Kong a chance for victory.

As play opened this afternoon Hong Kong were 90 ahead with three wickets in hand..
