JAPAN'S SHIPPING.

Some Revival Of Trade With

Shanghai.

There has been a marked im- provement in shipping to Shanghai, 'says the Japan Chronicle. The! N.Y.K. reports full cargoes for its vessels. It is problematical, how- ever, whether this favourable situa- tion will continue permanently.

It is only a little over three weeks 23rd May since warlike operations have come to an end, but there are already signs of the cargo movement in- 7th June creasing. Of four N.Y.K. vessels which left for Shanghai since peace was restored, the first two were rather disappointing, but the next vessel, the Kusagi Maru, secured cargoes totalling 8,050 tona; 600 tons of machinery and aundry goods 5th June from Osaka, 1,500 tons of raw cot- ton, sugar and sundry goods frem 24th May Kobe, and 950 tons of cement and The sundry goods from Moji. 7th June. fourth vessel, the Yawata Maru left Kobe recently with 1,500 tons of raw cotton and will take 500 tons 20th May of sugar in Moji.

20th May

It must be remembered, however, that sugar shipments have been 3rd June made to forestall higher import duties effective on April 1. Raw cotton cargoes are those which have been stored in Kobe and other ports pending, the restoration of peace in Shanghai. Cement is needed for 29th May reconstruction work. Cotton goods are not likely to move in the imme- diate future, so that the outlook cannot be viewed with optimism. 2nd June Lower Freights for South America. Noon.

The N.Y.K. has now reduced its freight rate on cotton goods for South America from $15 to $13.75 per 40 cubic feet. The first vessel enjoying the new rate will be the Rakuyo, Maru. The reason for the present reduction is to compete with the Dollar Line, it is stated.
