These charges were made to-night! in the Chamber by the Socialisti member for Ghent, M. Anseele. Speaking at great length, M. Anseele insisted that the affair of the Albert Canal was so glaring a case of corruption that all those implicated in it deserved to go to jail for the rest of their lives. He 7th May mentioned specifically the leading cabinet member M. Renkin who he asserted, had profited most from the transaction.

Storm of Indignation, These sensational revelations ovoked a storm of indignation which temporarily when the Minister of Public Works M. Van Zaeneghem declared that he would answer all questions pertaining to the charges. He declared that there 9th May had been twa tenders for the con- struction of the canal, one from a reputable Netherlands firm and the other from the Belgian contractors 20th May in question. The price made by the latter, he said, was slightly below! that of the Netherlands firm whose 4th May specifications, however, were greatly 19th May superior to the Belgian plans. 20th May

Van Zaeneghem made a strong impression on the house with the 8th May declaration that he supported the Dutch project because as a civil en- gineer he had immediately realised its greater value to the country. He was, however, overborne by the majority of the Cabinet led by M. Renkin, he concluded.
