CHINA AND LEAGUE OF NATIONS

HOW BOTH CAN CO-OPERATE FOR BENEFIT OF WORLD

MUTUAL BENEFITS.

London, Tuesday.

A strong plea for the co-operation be- tween China and the League of Nations was made to-day by Mr. S. F. Meyers, Chairman, at the annual meeting of the Chinese Association. He declared that the League was called on to participate in solving a problem of international peace in the Far East which was at present en- dangering the world. The League could help China with men and money, and would not seek to establish foreign con- trol in China but show her how to control herself. He meant that League tutorship was not tutelage namely of expert teach- ing of the arts of modern government without a vain attempt at guardianship. China could benefit much from outside assistance, while there was no doubt of the advantages the West-could-obtain-from-a- rehabilitated China. With internal peace the Chinese share of world trade, both as a producer and consumer, would increase greatly. Reuter.

AT GENEVA CONFERENCE.

SCHEME MEETS WITH APPROVAL.

London, To-day.

In the general commission of Disarmament Conference at Geneva the British delegate, Sir John Simon, moved that without prejudice to other proposals for discussion under later heads the Conference declares its approval of the principle of qualitative dis- armament, namely, selection of certain classes for, descriptious of weapons, with a view to pro- hibiting by International con- vention their possession or use by any state.

He expressed the view that qualitative disarmament Was more effective, as the most, im- portant thing was that no state should continue to live under a system in which all classes of armaments were allowed.

A proposal on the lines of Sir John Simon's resolution is before the Conference in a plan put for- ward by Italy and the United States.

Another plan for international control of certain armaments has been advanced by France. The Yugo-Slavia delegation sup ported the later scheme to-day and Sir John Simon's resolution was approved by the German de- legate, Dr. Nadolny. It was also supported by Sir Thomas Wil- ford of New Zealand, and Signor D. Grandi of Italy. The debate was adjourned until to-morrow. -Byitish Wireless Service.
