There is something about the Eships of the Bibby Line which gives every ship her personality, and makes them particularly popu- lar and interesting with the sailor- Man. The news that the Warwick- to Japanese shire has been sold scrappers for £13,000 is therefore of interest to many outside area directly covered by the com- pany's services. Her passenger accommodation was outstanding, being fitted out with Mr. Bibby's patent tandem cabin, which at once so strongly appeal- ed to all concerned that overhead were taken out by the principal shipbuilding companies in the United Kingdom, while! special licences have been granted to various shipping companies for individual ships. On completion, the Warwick- shire was put under the command of Captain G. H. Harris,
one the senior masters of the fleet, and ran on the company's Rangoon ser- vice with the happiest freedom from incident. During the war she carried 2,700 troops in Janu
to ary, 1917, from East Africa Karachi. and when homeward bound was torpedoed in the Medi- terranean, but managed to steam to Bizerta, where she landed her passengers, crew and cargo safely, In April, 1919, she was again re- quisitioned to repatriate Austra lian troops, and made two voyages, carrying from 2,500 officers

STEAMERS' MOVEMENTS.

New York, March 10, The British motership Lagan- bank has rescued the crew of the H. F. de Bardeleben, thus ending the latter's headlong race through the Atlantic.
A message on the previous day stated: Plunging in the heavy At- lantic seas is a ship that cannot stop, the American collier H. F. de Bardeleben, which for nearly two days had been steaming complete- ly out of control. A rescue vessel is following in order to take off the $4 men on board the collier as can be safely soon as the boats lowered, The II. F. de Bardele-· ben's rudder has been smashed, but the crew dare not heave to, lest the giant waves sink the ship. The collier therefore continues on! her headlong course, which she has pursued since the White Star lin- er Adriatic first sighted her near Nantucket Shoal, off the Massa- chusetts coast, yesterday.
The F. de Bardeleben, 5;020 tons, is owned by the Bulk Trans-
her! portation Corporation, and port of registry is New Orleans.
She was built in 1918 at Seattle. and was first known as the Bre- merton.
PROSPECTS FOR SHIPBUILDING.
It has been stated that, because there are vessels of 3,000,000 tons laid up in this country, the pros-
of new pects
contracts
are un- favourable. According to The Motor Ship, this point is unduly stressed, for the reason, that there are British ships of 3,700,000 tons gross over 20 years old. Even in ordinary times these ships would be obsolescent, but their unit- ability for operation under modern conditions is far greater than in normal periods, owing to the very rapid advance that has been made in the construction of propelling machinery since the vessels were built. A 20-year-old steamer is now, for this reason, as out of date as was a 30-year-old vessel in 1912. Of ships over 20 years old in the world there are 20,000,000 tons gross, and not one could com- plete on any basis of economy with a modern motor ship. It is be- Heved, therefore, that the slight- ext turn in the tide would mean
men.
Thereafter she was refitted, and returned to the Liverpool- London-Rangoon service. Her last voyage as a passenger ship finish- ed in November, 1927, and when her passenger accommodation had been taken out and her gross ton- The Ben Line 6.8.
