"It seems clear in the eyes of!! the law that a married woman is free to depart from her husband whenever she wishes, and the law disclaims the power to pre- vent her,"
This dictum was uttered, in what is known as the "Helen of Troy" case, by Mr. Justice Mc-. Cardie in the course of a judg ment given in favour of the Cam-. bridge Doctor, Charles (Searle, who was sued for damages by the grocer's assistant, John Place, for enticing away the latter's) wife, which Searle denied.
Mr. Justice McCardie said that he was not concerned with the question of ethics and emphas-t ised the revolutionary change in women's position as the result of modern legislation,

Rio de Janeiro, Yesterday. After eighteen months of Dicta- torship, Brazil is returning to a Constitutional Government which President Vargas agreed last night to restore, following a conference of political leaders to consider the demands of the states of Sao Paolo. and Rio Gran do Sul for the restoralion of the freedom of the press; the appointment of Commissions to draft the
new Constitution and to settle Brazil's state and municipal debts; also for the holding of Parliamentary elections this year.
SIR SHOU-SON CHOW IN COURT.

Sir Shou-son Chow appeared in the Central Police Court this morning, as the complainant, be- fore Mr. W. Schofield, in a case & in which a Chinese gardener was # charged with cutting a tree Shou-son Hill. Defendant pleaded Kuilty.

Acting Sub-Inspector Cunning- ham said that Sir Shou-son did not take a serious view of the case, and had expressed the desire that defendant be merely warned. De fendant was actually seen in the act of cutting the branches of ag wild trae, which blossomed with yellow flowera when in season.
His Worship bound the defen- dant over in a bond of $25 to be on good behaviour for a year.
MOTOR FATALITY IN HENNESSY ROAD.
Woman Dies in Hospital.
Mr. C. E. Gahagan, of the Hopg Kong Electric Company, was in- volved in a fatal motor accident yesterday afternoon, according to a Police report.
Mr. Gahogan was driving his car along Hennessy Road in an east- erly direction, when near to house No. 449, a woman, named Leung Woon (24); of 98, Second Street, crossed the road diagonally. He sounded his horn when about twenty yards off. The woman be- care quite stricken and ran back. In trying to avoid the waiman,: Mr. Gahagan swerved, but the. woman ́again turned back, and was knocked down. She received in- juries which proved fatal on ar rival at the hospital.
