CHINA STATION NOTES.
In
this picture, when heart failure takes away the head of the house, and an accident incapaci- tates the eldest son, no one is left to work the barren fields and BG eke out even that poor existence which the family had previously enjoyed. The family must move into town to a poor shack, giving up the farm on which it has lived all its life.
For women folk of the mountains to work the farm themselves, ie out of the question. Cooking, caring for the house, feeding hungry mouths, milking the cows, feeding the little livestock they possess→→ this is their work. "GUILTY HANDS."
"LADIES OF THE BIG HOUSE."
A number of Interesting anec dotes regarding Sylvia Sidney's early stage and screen experiences, were told at the Hollywood Para- mount studio, when she and Gene Raymond were on the sets making "Ladles of the Big House," a ro- mantle story of two young lovers, cruelly separated by the law just before their wedding day, which is the feature picture at the King's Theatre to-day.
"Miss Sidney's first stage role," said an old friend, "called for a good old-fashioned, blood-curdling screen as the curtain came down at the end of the second act. The au- dience was so terrified by it that Miss Sidney became a specialist in Latave screams as a curtain cus-in- a succession of plays. It took heri some time to live down her reputa- tion as the 'terror actress'."
Gene Raymond said he witnessed the following trying situation: "Miss Sidney was playing a scene once in which she picked up a waste basket full of revolvers and carried it from a room under the nose of the police."
Raymond continued: *IT was suddenly aware of a change in Mias: Sidney's acting. She became more intense; the audience became more; alert. There was a crash on the stage. The audience was deathly. still; there was not a snicker in the house. Miss Sidney continued her vibrant but collected performance; but the bottom had fallen out of the basket and the police had to pretend not to see the revolvers.' By her capable acting Misa Sidney held the attention of the audience and saved the scone."
