The secret of sales-

CHEWING GUM KING manship is, he said, to get the

DEAD.

From £10 Capital to Millions.

Mr. William Wrigley, the "chewing-gum king," died at Phoenix, Arizona. His death, at the age of 71, was the result of acute indigestion following weeks of serious illness.

At 11 he sold newspapers in New York. From waiter in a restaurant he became cashier and then travelling salesman for rubber stamps. He arrived at Chicago thirty years ago with a capital of £10 and began selling soap.

Through premiums, in the shape of small packets of chewing gum, he first discovered the possibilities of making a vast fortune.

Wrigley was a business genius who relied upon advertising for

and

£15,000,000 A Year. After examining the pros- pects of soap and baking pow der, be selected chewing-gum to pave his way to fortune, with Chicago as the world's distribut ing centre. To popularise his wares he started national de- bates, "To chew or not to chew," in which

leading physicians, psychologists,

business people took part.

During the war full-page ad- vertisements drew attention to gum-chewing as a remedy for human ailments. In

every public square

regiments of Wrigley's impish soldiers with their special head-gear paraded on automatic electric signboards, marching, counter marching,

and saluting.

The habit which Americans first regarded as a bad one, soon became £ general custom. spreading to Canada, Europe, and Asia. By 1925 the annual sales exceeded £15,000,000.
