THEY HAVE FOUGHT WITH COURAGE THAT IS UNPARALLELED,
All last night, the Chin se subjected the Japanese lines on the Chupei front to a terrific "strafe." It was thought, at one time, that the Chinese might make a night counter-attack, but this was not undertaken.
Chinese reports claim the recapture of Minohong- chen, after severe fighting in which the Japanese suffered heavy losses, Japanese circles, however, deny such reports.
Severe fighting is in progress beyond Kiangwan, and the village is now said to he virtually in Japanese hands. The Chinese troops are fighting desperately and courageously, but no human beings can stand against the barrage of steel and high explosives which the Japanese are now bringing to hear upon them.
Again the Municipal authorities of Shanghai are he- coming apprehensive of dis-rders in the Settlement as a result of the thousands of idle workers, and attempts are being made to accommo hate them elsewhere, but the problems of feeding so many hungry mouths is a serious problem.
The Chinese air base at Hangchow is reported to have been bombed, this morning, by the Japanese. Much damage to planes and hangars is said to have been done.

Shanghai (11.46 a.m.), To-day. The severest fighting, yet experienced, has occurred beyond Kiangwan, where the Japanese, in spite of the resolute opposition, pushed into new positions, after intensive artillery and air bombard- ment, and are holding whatever ground they have of succeeded in capturing. Successive waves counter-attacks have crumbled and been broken under withering musketry fire.
The Chinese seem to be shaken by the con- tinued thunder of the barrage which has now shifted to the rear and by the pounding from high explosive shells from aircraft.
