A BIG OFFENSIVE

CHINESE ARTILLERY BOMBED SHANGHAILANDERS EULOGIZED BY AMERICAN COMMANDER.

(Our Own Correspondent).

Shanghai, To-day.

Yesterday was, relatively, a quiet one distin- guished only by desultory shelling and the dropping of a few bombs from Japanese 'planes.

A climax was reached, however, by a brief but terrific bombardment of Chapei by the Japanese.

Another Big Fire.

This bombardment had the effect of creating another gigan- tic bluze, which threatened Range Road, and necessitated the summoning of the Fire Brig- ade.

The conflagration destroyed a large block of property inside the Chinese lines.

TRAIL OF BROKEN RECORDS IN WASH OF GIANT VESSEL,

The Canadian Pacific Steamship Company have coined a new meaning for the word luxury, with the launching of the as. Em- preas of Britain, which arrived in Hong Kong this morning on her maiden cruise round the world. Comfort and convenience has been the keynote of her construction, and there is no better phrase for the description of this giant luxury liner, than that used by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, who, at the launching ceremony, said "The vessel can be considered in construction as the last werd in ship- building, and as regards her appointments, she will have no rivals.”
