GERMANY'S OLDESTI

VOLUNTEER DEAD.

Fought Through Four Campaigns.

NONAGENARIAN.

Duesseldorf, Jan. 18. Germany's oldest volunteer In the Great War, Emil Friedrich Echtermayer, died here to-day Im his 90th year.

Echtermayer had been con scripted in 1868, serving subas quently through the Danish can paign and the Austro-Prusalan way. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870, ha was again called to the colours and was several times wounded: In August, 1914, Echtermayer reported again and, having been found to be physically fit, wi allowed to join his old regiment. He was soon given a commission. and was later awarded the Iron Cross for conspicuous, bravery.

After two years, however, when the fighting had settled. down to trench warfare, the seventy-four years old Lieuten ant had to be, invalided home, as the strain of the new war methods was found to be too great for him. He submitted, under protest, returning to his native Duesseldorf which, sinte that time, he had left: but once when the city was occupied by the French.Trans-Ocean Kuo Min.
