Great excitement prevailed at Shamshulpo on January

• ́25, when a wash-house in the Nanking lines of the Barracks housing the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders caught fire.

The conflagration was first seen by a number of soldiers engaged in musketry drill near the wash-house. The hut was completely destroyed, and, fanned by a strong. breeze, the fames to the next hut. The men in barracks, about a thousand strong, were called out and they tackled the blaze with buckets of water. A full story of the out- break is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The Chieftain of the Hong Kong St. Andrew's Society presided at the Burns Nicht celebration held at Lane, Crawford's Restaurant on January 23. "Immortal Memory of Robert Burns" Mr. W. Lucas Handy- In toasting the side said that a man was not a genuine Scot if he was ignorant, among other things, of the life and work of Burns. Favoured by ideal weather, the sixth annual Athletic Meeting of the Volunteer Defence Corps was held on the Club de Recreio ground, King's Park, on January 23. The Portuguese Company, displaying all-round superiority in practically all the events, won the Inter-Company Challenge Cup presented by the Commandant (Lient-Col, L. G. Bird, D.S.O.,.O.B.E.), C. A. d'Almada e Castro, of the Portuguese contingent, won the 100 yards, 220 yards, and 400 yards in good time and splendid style. A detalled report is given in the OVERLAND CHINA-MAIL.

The local colleges and schools Speech Days began on January 26, when prizes were presented at the Government Vernacular Middle School by the Hon. Mr. T. N. Chau, M.A.. J.P., and at the Ellis Kadoorie School, by Mrs. R. E. O. Bird. The Belillos Public School for girls held its annual Speech Day on January 27 when Mrs. W. T.
