A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

The public examination in bankruptcy of a young, European resident took place in the Supreme Court, before . the Chief Justice, on January 14.

A.O.F. C. Average of Shanghai Stocks

BEPROSVAZATAS STOCKS

The debtor, whose liabilities amounted to $17,790 and assets $615, attributed his Insolvency to transactions with share brokers and exchange transactions,

In the first six months of 1981 he made between $8,000 and $10,000, but started to lose when the market went against him in July. His biggest fall came in September and he found himself bankrupt.

4

The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives a full report of the debtor's examination.

*

As the sequel to the burning of a cinema Alm at Kiddies' Christmas Party at a Peak residence on December 23, Messrs. Pathe Orient, Ltd., who were the exhibitors at the party, were summoned in the Central Magistracy. They were not convicted because the Magistrate found that it was not a public entertainment.

On other counts, however, the firm was fined for fail- ing to furnish a statement regarding removal of promises, and illegal storage of films.

A report of the Court case is given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

A record January Assizes which lasted only a quarter of an hour with only one case on the calendar opened and closed before the Pulsne Judge (Mr. Justice R. E. Lindsell) In the Supreme Court on the morning of January 18.

The accused in the case was Chan Wing (36), who pleaded "guilty" to a charge of burglary at Mongkok, had an unenviable record of crime. First convicted in 1905 at the age of 11 years, he had, since, been convicted no fewer than 31 times, and had spent 19 years (half of his life) in Victoria Jail.

The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL furnishes a full report of this remarkable case.

In the realm of sport, football, "Rugger," cricket, hockey, yachting and golf are at present in the limelight here, the OVERLAND CHINA MAÏL carries full accounts of the various games. The dispute between the H.K.F.A. and the Chinese "Soccer" Clubs is still unsettled and the Chinese are running their own 'football competitions in- dependent of the Association. Reports of these matches are also given in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

Railway's Opportunity.

A growing body of public and oficial opinion is now urging the adoption of the system on the British main lines as a way of restoring the railway's prosperity. It has been shown that sayings of $22,000,000 per annum in work- ing costs could thus be effected, from which sum #18,000,000 would be available for the cutting of goods and passenger rates.

To instal the system throughout the main lines with speeded-up services would cost $154,000,000 compared with a cost of £341,000,- better tone has been in ovid! Décember 24. Shanghat.
