Hike to Lan Tau Peak.

ENJOYABLE OUTING.

Glorious weather conditions favoured the D.R.C.'s first hiking party on their trip to Lan Tau on Sunday, the objective being the essent of the Lan Tau Peak.

The Party, numbering 84 in all, including ladies and a few friends of members, landed at 11.30 a.m., the ascent being ac- complished by 1.45 p.m., which was being excellent going, con- sidering the steep and rough na- ture of the ground.

The climbing party was led by Dr. L. Guy. Eight members of the party reached the summit, 3,065 feet above S08 level, slightly less than Tai Mo Shan, but more difficult of access.

Although fine and warm, the weather was hazy and visibility only fairly good, the splendid panorama from the Peak, being only partly revealed.

Mr. A. Biggs, had charge of the arrangements for the trip, which was an enjoyable one, and which, it hoped, will ehortly be followed by others of a similar nature.

A NEW COCKTAIL.

"The Gaucho" from the

Argentine.

A new cocktail, "the Gaucho," will shortly be given to the world by the Argentine Republic.

For centuries the mate plant, from which the new cocktail made, has been used by the people

of the Argentine. The cow-boy de-

But she was unsuccessful, and so by a Chinese Revenue Officer and was arrested in Connaught Road she scraped enqugh money together convicted at the Central Magis regiment was stationed, to journey to Saids, where her son's tracy this morning.

The colonel of the regiment was powerless to help the mother, but her entreaties moved him so much that he granted the boy four weeks

Thus given the opportunity of taking "French leave," the boy lost territory, and consequently beyond no time in getting out of French recall to the Legion. He la now back in Germany with his mother.

A JUDGE'S

"

QUERY.

Are Women Friends When They Kiss.

"If you see two women kiss, would not that be evidence that they were friends?" asked Mr. Justice Owen during the hearing of a divorce case in Sydney.

There was a chorus of protest from the barristers' table at the question, and Mr. Boyce, K.C., the defending counsel, remarked, "There are friends 'and' friends."

"Yes," replied the judge, "I aup- pose some friends are enemies.”

Now Mr. Fortunate Felle,, after 25 years of experiment, has suc- ceeded in distilling an extract of the mate plant which will serve as the basis of the new cocktail.

RAINBOW BEER.

Drinks to Match Your Colour,

"A pint of beer, please." *"Yen air. Brown, red, blue, green, yellow, or purple?"

“Oh, just a nice medium crushed strawberry."

This is the sort of conversation we are likely to hear this year, when beer of various hues will probably be on sale in London.

Chemists have been hard at work' colouring beer, and now claim that they can produce it in any desired colour.

Already green beer, tasting exactly like the ordinary variety is on sale,

The best hostesses will in future be able to order their beer to fit the colour-schemes of their flats, and to order a drink in barmony with their frocks.

Increasing numbers of men are visiting New York undertaking es- tablishments nowadays to place "advance orders" for the coffins which they are to be buried.

Claiming that he knew no- thing of the presence of 2,000 heroin pills which were conceal- ed in a bundle of cabbages which he was carrying, a Chinese male told Mr. E. H. Williams that he had only been in the Colony a short time, and that he took the chen, ignorant of the fact that bundle of cabbages from his kit-

RUBBER CLOGS NOW

Mill Girls Prefer Them to High-Heeled Shoes.

The silent clog has arrived in Lancashire and provided Boltor with a new Industry.

These new clogs look almost the same as the old type, but instead of iron on the soles there is rubber.

The principal of Messrs. J. Tho mas and Sons, Deansgate, Bolton, said that the chief reason for the decline of the clog trade was that they made such a clatter but now, that the silent clog had come they were becoming popular.

"Mill girls," he said, "are wear- ing these new clogs in preference to the high-heeled shoes which they had begun to adopt in place of the notay clogs."
