Royal Corps of Signals Defeated.

༄༔

NARROW MARGIN:

At King's Park yesterday the Y.M.C.A. second eleven defeated the Royal Corps of Signals by a goal to nil In a friendly hockey encounter.

1.

A very fast game was the fea- ture of the opening exchanges und- over-keenness was largely respon- sible for a blank score sheet at half time. The military centre- forward had hard luck both in the first half and in the latter stages of the game. W. J. Brown scored the winning goal half way through the second half after, a good for-

ward movement

Outstanding players for the Y.M.C.A. were Mitchell, Stoker and Brown, whilst the Signals" centre forward was always in the limelight.

A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE,

Nearly seven months ago, Mr. Douglas G. Carstairs, Area Manager of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institute, Hong Kong, was found dead in bed with a terrible stab wound in his abdomen at 2, Luna Building, Kimberley Rond. The affair was a baffling mystery, and after vigilant inves- tigations, the Police have decided to hold an inquest, the date of which has been fixed for December 17. A report is con- tained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL,

The new Aberdeen Valley Reservoir was officially opened by His Excellency the Governor (Sir William Peel, K.C.M.G., K.B.E.) on December 15. Sir William paid grent tribute to the splendid work of the P.W.D. Engineers, to whom, he declared, the Colony owed a great debt. Director, of Public Works (the Hon. Mr. H. T. Creasy, C.B.E.) gave an interesting survey of the dam, and the benefits that would follow its Installation. A full report is contained in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The Chinese football dispute has come to an end al last. The Football Association are standing firm by their rights as regards, football, and the Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation, whose influence over the Chinese Clubs had brought about the dispute, is politely but, never- theless forcefully informed that it is an unrecognised body in the eyes of the Football Association. The protracted correspondence is at the end. A full report of the F.A‚'s decision is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

The fourteenth extra race meeting held at Happy Valley on December 12 rang down the curtain on a year's racing. Mr. L. G. Frost had a great day, winning four races in succession, paying over $35 on Pride of Tsingtao in the fourth race. A sensation was caused in the Autumn Cham- · plons, when Sitting Bull, considered to be a cast-iron cer- tainty, finished up last but one in a field of five. Orlando, a great favourite, made a welcome come-back in the last race, paying $58,80 for a win,, and $13.50 for a place. The rider was Y. M. Loo.
